History

2009 entrusted to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD).

Description

Catacomba di Domitilla (Catacombs of Domitilla) declare to be the largest and oldest underground cemetery in Rome. The tunnels have a length of 17 km on four levels, some 150,000 Christians were buried here. We guess they are neither, but they are definitely the catacombs with the most variations in writing the name. We found:

The Catacombs of Domitilla are named after the Domitilla family, which initially ordered them to be dug. The property was owned by Flavia Domitilla, a Roman noblewoman, granddaughter of Emperor Vespasian and a niece of Emperors Titus and Domitian. Both the Greek Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church celebrate a Flavia Domitilla as a saint. According to the Christian legend she died a martyr for refusing to sacrifice to idols, other sources say she was banished for political reasons. So it seems not only the names of the site are fuzzy, the legend is also rather unclear.

The site is entrusted to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) who see the main goal in the guided tour to communicate the deep meaning of its history. A total of 12 underground chambers have been renovated and show a wide range of impressive murals with Christian motives.
