| 2015 | cave house opened as accommodation. |
The Rockhouse Retreat is a classical cave house which was built by its owner Angelo Mastropietro in 2014 and 2015. In 2015, he opened it as unique accommodation under the phrase "Britain’s First 21st Century Luxury Cave House Holiday Retreat". Nevertheless, this cave house is not a modern cave house, it’s a historic one, which was inhabited for 800 years. From 2014 it was equipped with modern amenities, like heating, water, sewage and electricity. The original structure of te walls, caused by the digging of the rooms with pickaxes by hand, is still there, just with new paint. The facade is natural rock, only holes for windows and doors were cut. Modern cave homes are usually a large tunnel dug by a tunnel-boring machine, with the entrance at the end closed by a brick wall fitted with a standard door.
