Description

Ürgüp Büyükakten Yeraltı Evi Müzesi (Ürgüp Büyükakten Underground House Museum) is a museum located inside a seven floor cappadocia subterranean house. The local history museum has furniture and other daily life item of life in Cappadokia 100 years ago. At this time water was carried by hand from the Karamanoğlu Mosque and there was no electricity. The rooms were dug into the rock, many things like cupboards were carved into the rock.

The museum is named after the city Ürgüp and after the owner Yüksel Büyükakten, who restored the house and made it available to all travelers. Today it is operated by his son Ömer Büyükakten. His grandmother was living here in the 1920s, and most of the furniture is actually from her. The museum is recreating the daily life of that time, and there are frequently events where the tandoori is lit again. Bread and other food are cooked, grapes crushed, pekmez syrup and tomato boiled, and carpets weaved.
