This region is actually the poorest part of the country and thus heavily affected by depopulation. It covers the mountain ridges and hill countries along the eastern border, which have many karst areas and thus numerous show caves.
The area of Kuÿaj and Beljanica is a large regional anticline with a general north-south direction. The carbonate masses of the wings of the anticline were intensively karstified, which led to the creation of the largest karst massif in Serbia. The Kuÿaj-Beljanica karst massif has huge reserves of high-quality water. Typical are huge poljesn, flat plains with a river which emerges from karst springs on one side and vanishes in sinkholes on the other side.
