Location:	At Flaat. Near Evje and Hornnes, north of Kristiansand. From Evje follow Rv9 to the North, turn right at the Otra lake towards Gautestad, after 2.5 km turn right again. 2 km to the mine. Signposted "Gruveomr.".
Open:	APR to MAY by appointment. JUL to 15-AUG daily 13. 16-AUG to 01-NOV by appointment. [2005]

Description

Flaat Nikkelgruve is a big nickel mine. Once it was the largest nickelmine in northern Europe, and more than 350 men worked at the mine and the refinery. The mine is 440 m deep, which means it reaches below sea level. Only the upper part, which is also the oldest part, is restored and open to the public.

Although the mine is restored and equipped with electric light, the tour is still rather tough. Rubber boots and helmet are provided. Old clothes are a good idea too.
