1961 | cave discovered. |
1962 | opened to the public. |
大岳鍾乳洞 (Odake Cave) was discovered in 1961 and immediately developed as a show cave and opened to the public. Since the beginning it is under the management of the same family. At first 180 m of cave were known but further explorations extended this to about 1 km. It is located at a campground and part of this operation, so we guess as a guest of the campground you should be able to visit the cave. Nevertheless, it's a small cave and with visitor numbers dropping since 20 years the cave is often closed. It is recommended to make a reservation before visiting the cave.
The cave is located at the foot of Mt. Odake in the center of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. The cave was designated a natural monument by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
