Tokyo Prefecture

The limestone hills west of Tokyo are riddled with caves. During the 20th century, numerous caves were opened to the public, and it seems they were quite popular during the 1970s and 1980s. But decreasing visitor numbers and too many rather tiny caves resulted in the closure of several show caves. We started this page with a list of caves provided by the SEC in the 1990s, and of the seven show caves, four are now closed.
