| 1960s | catacombs rediscovered by a team of archaeologists from the British School at Rome led by J.B. Ward-Perkins. |
| 1988 | initial analysis of the site by Professor Vincenzo Fiocchi Nicolai. |
| 2006-2011 | securing of the site by the Museo dell'Agro Veientano in Formello and the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology. |
Catacomba di Monte Stallone (Monte Stallone Catacombs) has five short galleries and a cubicle with burial niches. There are also floor tombs in the floor, which is rather rare. The tombs were sealed with mortar and tiles or bricks, and then covered by a layer of white or colored plaster. The general characteristics are typical for the 4th century, so this was the time the catacombs were in use. Like other catacombs it was obviously created in the late 3rd centuray and abandoned in the early 5th century. The findings from the recent renovation and conservation work at the site can be visited in Room 6 of the Museum of the Veientano Agro of Formello. This museum is also offering the guided tours of the catacombs.
The site is open only on the last Sunday of the month. They state the open hours are 11-13, but actually there is only a single tour starting at 11 which takes two hours. While reservations are not mandatory they are strongly recommended. The visits are organized by the Museum of the Veientano Agro, participants meet at 11 at the museum in Piazza San Lorenzo 8.
