Description

Catacomba Ad Decimum (Catacomb to the Tenth) was named after the nearby post station called Ad Decimum, because it was located at mile 10 of the Via Latina. The catacombs have a rather irregular layout. From the access stairs a system of two parallel tunnels branches off, each with transverse rooms. There are three monumental cubicula, reserved for important members of the community. The walls are decorated with epigraphs, engraved graffiti, and small grave goods affixed to the mortar around the tombs. There are several richly frescoed tombs, including the Arcosolium of Biator. It shows a depiction of the Traditio Legis, Christ delivering the law to Peter in the presence of Paul. The Anonymous Arcosolium features praying figures, a Good Shepherd, a scene of Daniel among the lions, and a miniature version of a College of the Apostles.
