Description

The Museo civico archeologico del Distretto minerario (Archaeological Museum of the Mining District) is an archaeological museum dedicated to the archaeology of the mining. It starts with copper mining since prehistoric times and ends with the historic iron mining. The Grotta di S. Giuseppe revealed many remains of the copper age, then the furnaces of the Etruscan and Roman times. For a long time the extraction of copper strongly influenced the life of the inhabitants of the island. It was replaced by the iron mining, which finally ended in the 20th century.

The museum was built as the last building of the town, the panoramic windows offer a view towards Monte Giove and the mines of the Rio Marina mining park. On two levels numerous exhibits are presented in rust-colored display cases to recall the color of iron.
