History

Description

Grotte de Danne (Danne Cave) is actually a rock formation named Rocher Albert in honor of the president of the local Vosges Club from 1935 to 1964. This rock formation of reddish sandstone is quite spectacular and has numerous overhanging parts forming shelters and small caves. The cave is quite spectacular, obviously the weathering followed a vertical crack in the rock which was widened, at some places to a decent size. Such erosional caves are always rather small, and this is not the biggest one in the area, but the rock formation and the form of the cave is quite exceptional. And it is definitely big enough to offer shelter during rain or in hot weather.

The descriptions of such minor tourist sites on the web is getting worse, we guess due to the introduction of portals and AI. So there is actually only a single description on the web, which calls it "A place of refuge and remembrance". We guess the remote cave was used as shelter once and again, probably during the 1870 War and the First and Second World Wars. This would have been interesting, but we were not able to find more background info.

The short hike has another interesting site. About halfway is the Finstingerkopf forest lodge, formerly owned by the lords of Fénétrange (13th and 14th centuries). The area is full of hiking trails and there are numerous trails published on hiking websites. The local tourist information offices offer a "Hiking in the Phalsbourg Region" map for free.Mein Standort
