History

Description

Grotte des Amoureux (Cave of Lovers, Lovers’ Cave) is a small erosional cave in sandstone which is located at the road and tus quite easy to visit. It’s only a 50 m walk from the road, most other caves involve some hiking, so we actually listed it for its easy accessibility. The road follows the valley of the Nesselbach, the cave is located between the road and the rivulet, a few meters above the rivulet. The cave was named after the fact that soldiers of the Phalsbourg/Pfalzburg garrison used to bring their lovers there. However, as the cave is rather damp this place is not very comfortable, so this legend is probably wrong. The cave and the spring are traditionally associated with fertility.

Though only 50 m from the road, the cave is tricky to find, so we recommend using the coordinates. However, there is a sort of parking lot on the southern site of the road, which is also not signposted as a parking lot, and the cave is more or less on the opposite side of the road from the eastern end. Just follow the road from the eastern end eastward for a few meters and look for the trail on the opposite side.
