As the name suggests, the Neustädtler Hobbybergwerk (Neustädtler Hobby Mine) is not a mine, but a hobby. Former miner Hans-Jürgen Brecheis has created a kind of private mine replica and a mining museum here. In an extension to his home in Schneeberg Neustädtel, there is a small mine containing original equipment and machines. Most of them are in working order and visitors can try them out. And there are models, miners' lamps, minerals and ores, historical photographs, decorations and propaganda posters from the GDR. The mining technology shown here is the fairly modern mining that SDAG Wismut operated in the 1970s and 1980s. Simply because the operator of the museum worked there until he retired. He was responsible for the ventilation ducts, airtight pipes with which fresh air was transported from the ventilation machines to the mine workings.
Hans-Jürgen Brecheis died in 2021, and we actually have no idea if the mine replica is still open. For his work, he was posthumously honored with the Silver Heart, an award presented by the mining town of Schneeberg to deserving and committed citizens.
