Description

photography
Agios Spyridon, Cyprus. Public Domain.

This is probably the newest cave church on Cyprus and was built by the brothers Yiannakis and Vasso Pelekanou. They erected it in memory of their parents, who were from the village of Asha which is under Turkish occupation. Actually their father Christoforos Pelekanos decided to build the chapel into the cave when he first saw it. He made the design and started to build it using characteristic white stones. He unfortunately died unexpectedly at the age of 69, and his sons decided to complete the chapel following his original plans.

The chapel is a real church and primarily used for weddings and baptisms. There are celebrations of 12-DEC and 11-AUG, but no mass service. The chapel is open for the public.
