Description
The underground city of Derinyuku was built as a hideout in eary
christian times, during the 9th and 10th century.
There are narrow passages with rooms on both sides.
The city has a church, wells, stables, cellars, refectories, and wineries.
Air was provided by 55m deep ventilation shaft.
A large room with a barrel vaulted ceiling on the second floor was a missionary
school, the rooms on the left side were study rooms.
The settlement is built downward into the ground.
It is up to 85m deep, with the cruciform church on the lowest floor.
The settlement has four different floors.
Only about 10% of the construction is developed and open to the public.
