History

Description

Động Mê Cung (Me Cung Cave) is also sometimes called Động Mê Cung Hạ Long, as it is located on Lom Bo Island in Hạ Long Bay. It is located 25 m above the small jetty, there are some stairs to the cave entrance. The cave is a show cave with trails and electric light. Like all the caves here it is visited on day trips by boat with one of several boat operators. Most trips include the entrance fee to the cave. Typically, the ships stop at the Jetty for an hour so guests can visit the cave.

The cave contained archaeological remains which are between 7,000 to 10,000 years old. It seems they were eating Melania snails, also mussel shells, seashells, and nematodes, and they left their shells inside and outside the cave. As the snails only live in the water, they can not get ther naturally, they were obviously deposited by humans. Also fossilized and semi-fossilized animal bones were excavated. Bones found in a deep niche in the cave containing Pleistocene yellow soil deposits give an insight on the rituals of ancient Vietnamese people.
