The Haunted Cave is said to be Ohio’s only underground Halloween attraction. The tunnels of an abandoned limestone mine, 35 m below the surface are used to create a sort of underground theme park. Obviously it is open every year only in the last weeks before Halloween.
The Haunted Cave was at first organized and hosted by the Lewisburg Historical Society. The installations in the cave were built by local groups, which vary slightly from year to year. In 2006 the Northmont Science Olympiad team, Northmont Junior ROTC, Boy Scout troop 246, Northmont INTERACT and the civil air patrol cadets from New Lebanon were involved. Many of the best haunts ever were based on the work of the mechanical and electronics specialist Jim Witter. It seems the whole thing is now operated by a company.
There are actually three different tours to the mine. The Haunted Cave is a typical Halloween attraction with monsters and zombies. They are played by actors which do their best to scare the visitors. The Mine Wagon Tour is a historic tour of the Lewisburg Limestone mine. It has nothing to do with Halloween, it’s a historical tour. It’s a 40-minute ride on a waggon pulled by a traktor uses a different part of the mine. And Trick or Treat Underground! seems to be a sort of fake Halloween evening. Children bring their own bucket and load up on candy, which is passed out by actors. It takes place in the same part of the mine as the Haunted Cave, just without the scaring.
