History

1870s produced high-grade silver, gold, lead and copper.
1921 acquired by the Colorado School of Mines.

Geology

The Edgar Mine was named after the Edgar mineral vein that runs along the hillside above the mine.

Description

The abadoned Edgar mine at Idaho Sprins is one of countless silver and gold mines of this area. It is used by the Colorado School of Mines as a so-called Experimental Mine, which means it is used It is used as an underground laboratory for future mining engineers and a training area for practical training in mining techniques and systems. The topic teached underround are mine surveying, geological mapping, rock fragmentation and blasting, mine ventilation, rock mechanics instrumentation, underground mine unit operations, and mine safety.

The mine is also open as a tourist mine during summer, with one tour daily. The tours are conducted by students and staff. The topics of the tour are mining practice, mining economics, and the role of the mining industry in modern society. The guides show drilling, blasting, and mucking equipment. Helmets are provided, please bring warm clothes and sturdy shoes.
