Geology

Description

Aladdin Coal Tipple is located east of Aladdin and is a coal tipple, which is a wooden, late 1800s coal storing and processing plant. The structure is built on a hillside, and the coal coming out of the tunnel at the upper end was processed, sorted and cleaned while moving down the chute, using gravity as an energy source for this processing. In 1898 the railroad was closed and as a result the coal mines of the area were closed one after the other. The steam railroad was transport and customer at the same time, without the mining was not profitable any more. Aladdin Mine was the last mining operation still producing but finally also closed in 1911. The entrance of the mine tunnel was dangerous and so it was sealed about 30 years later, but the tipple was left to rot. The wood rotted away, and finally its top half toppled. Local preservationists re-stabilized the structure, but it is still in danger to collapse. It is freely accessible, there is a parking lot at the road and a trail around the structure. Entering the structure is not possible because it is too dangerous, it is fenced in.
