History

Description

Chapel Cave is a huge cavern which has a tapered ceiling and thus resembles a chapel. It is also known as 21 Horses Cave. We can only guess it's named so because the cave is big enough for 21 horses. Located in sandstone it was formed by erosion of softer sections of the rock.

It is located in the Hocking Hills, north of Hocking Hills State Park in the Hocking State Forest. From the parking lot at highway 11 there is a 1 km walk up the valley and then 200 m into the side branch on the right. There are numerous other caves, shelters and overhanging rocks along the trail. Nearby is also a famous waterfall named Chapel Waterfall, which also has several cavernous ledges. The waterfall exists only in spring, during snow-melt and in very wet times of the year.
