History

2012 project Тайны подземной Одессы (Secrets of Underground Odessa) founded.

Description

Тайны подземной Одессы (Secrets of Underground Odessa) is a museum located near the central bus station in the Moldavanka neighborhood. The visitors descent 25 m deep into the catacombs and visit a Cold War nuclear fallout shelter, a limestone mine, a partisans’ camp, an underground school from World War II, an underground church, an exhibition on slave trade, and finally an exhibition on the connection of crime with the underground.

Stories tell about criminals who used the passages. Slave traders who smuggled stolen women through the Odessa port to the slave markets of Constantinople stored their "goods" here. Some criminals not even used but also expanded the tunnels for their needs.

The project Тайны подземной Одессы (Secrets of Underground Odessa) was founded in 2012 and has since then opened three underground sites in the catacombs. Odessa Catacombs are a labyrinth of passages, between two and four meters wide, which run below a huge portion of the city. They were created some 200 years ago, when the city was actually built.
