History

2013 cave discovered.

Description

The Tazari Caves is a dry cave, with red clay on the level floor. The cave is guided by local boys, who wait at the cave entrance for customers. Then haggling for the price begins, a combo fee with the nearby chameleon farm is extra cheap.

While level, the cave has uneven ground, so we recommend good walking shoes and bring your own torch. The guides provide lamps which are quite weird. The guides will tell a lot of cave guide lores and local legends, but they also show the wildlife of the cave, bats, lizards, cave scorpions and more.

They say the Tazari Caves are the biggest and most extensive caves in Zanzibar. A bold statement, but they do not give any numbers and its unclear f it was ever surveyed. The cave has a collapse doline which is the entrance, and once down the slope the passage is mostly horizontal and quite large. The ceiling is sometimes 10 m high, but there are some low sections with only 1.5 m which require stooping.
