History

Description

The cave ถ้ำบ่อยา (Tham Bo Ya, Bo Ya Cave) is also called Wat Tham Bo Ya, as the entrance is a cave temple with a large Buddha statue. The cave is part of the monastery วัดเทพนิมิตรทรงธรรม (Wat Thep Nimitr Thongtham, Wat Thep Nimit Song Tham). A stairway at the far end of the temple leads on 255 steps from the foot of the hill up to the cave entrance.

Tham Bo Ya has three sections of different character. The first part at the entrance holds a large Buddha statue and is part of the temple. There are several sacred statues which are worshipped in Thai belief, such as เจ้าแม่กวนอิม (Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy) and พ่อปู่หลวงพรหม (Phor Pu Luang Phrom, Grandfather Luang Phrom). At the end of the religious section a dripstone cave with many speleothems starts. This part is famous for its wealth of stalactites and stalagmites. A dead end passage has a pond at the end called บ่อน้ำทิพย์ (Bo Nam Thip, Holy Water Well). This place is believed to be sacred by the locals and is also named Bo Ya Sacred Spring. The third section of the cave is another entrance section of the through cave on the other side of the rock.

This is a cave with a developed trail and electric light throughout. Nevertheless, it is also a cave temple, so there is no entrance fee, but donations for temple maintenance and cave lighting are welcome. There are no guided tours, and you may access the cave freely during the day when the temple is open. Please dress and behave dress modestly and avoid touching stalactites and stalagmites.
