Description

Expozícia uhoľného baníctva na Slovenku (Exposition of coal mining in Slovakia) presents the history of lignite mining in Handlová. The exposition is a branch of the Slovak Mining Museum in Banská Štiavnica. It was created in a building which was erected as a mining hotel in 1913. The exhibition is quite new and uses interactive displays and a mine replica to create the illusion of an underground mine.

The museum has three floors. The ground floor exhibition presents the mining technology of the second half of the 20th century. Massive mechanization with pneumatic and electric drilling hammers and breakers, furrowing machines, mining harvesters and mechanized reinforcement. The first floor explains the geology of the coal deposit, the history of the mining and the ming from exploration to processing of the coal. Also the dangers of mining like ventilation, ground water and the development of mine rescue are explained. The basement is an artificial coal mine of the early 20th century showing the manual mining and the transition to mechanization.
