History

1930 wooden trail built.

Description

Pokljuška Soteska (Pokljuka Gorge) is a gorge with a nice wooden trail, vertical walls, and no water most of the year. The river is reactivated after heavy rains and at snow melt, but actually the formation of the gorge happened about 10,000 years ago when the glaciers of the last ice age melted. This gorge is not very popular, a result of the lack of advertisement. This is actually quite nice, because there is little traffic and no crowds even in teh tourist season. On the other hand it is quite spectacular, with up to 50 m high vertical walls, a wooden trail built halfway up along this vertical cliff, and a length of 1 km.

The gorge is about 1 km long, the roundtrip hike is about 2.7 km long. Starting point is at the end of the road. The gorge is freely accessible without guide, but it’s also possible to book guided tours. The trail partly runs in the dry riverbed, so it’s best to avoid the gorge during heavy rains. Also in winter there is the general danger of falling rocks due to frost.

The gorge is located in karstified limestone, and while the gorge itself is the result of fast erosion by enormous amounts of water, the river also cut through karst caves. The biggest is Pokljuška luknja at the beginning of the gorge, which is quite spacious. With two entrances and three karstfensters, the cave is not dark at all. To reach it you have to follow the tril to the right for 50 m. There is also a large 24 m high natural bridge, and a 22 m high waterfall, which is dry most of the year though.
