History

1980s cave system discovered.

Description

Kåppasjåkka is about 2,300 meters long, which makes it Sweden’s 5th longest cave. The karst cave in thin layered black and white marble even has a few stalactites and stalagmites, and a cave river. The cave has various quite similar names, it is also called Kåppashåla or simply Kåppas and the river in fron is the Kåppasjokk. During dry times the cave river may be dry, in rainy time gum boots are a good idea. Cave tours are organized all year, during winter the cave is reached on snowshoes, a dog sled or snowmobile.

This is a guided cave trekking tour. The operator provides cave overall, headlamp, and helmet. Also transport from the meeting point to the trailhead, but there is a 2.5 km/45 minutes hike to the cave over mostly open marsh. Bring a backpack, sturdy shoes, gloves, lunch, change of clothes, towel and a plastic bag for the dirty clothes. If you have you may bring your own caving equipment.

We found actually two different organizations offering the tours, more or less at the same price and time. However, there seem to be afternoon tours all year while the morning tours are only offered during summer. We guess there is a tourguide who organizes the trip for the Hotell Fjället as well as for STF Abisko Turiststation, so it actually makes no difference where you book.
