History

Description

Cueva del Indio is located at a breathtaking strip of beach near Arecibo called Punta las Tunas. There are actually a great number of small sea caves along the shore which are famous for Taino engravings. Typically, there are faces and geometric patterns, which pre-date Columbus' arrival to the island in 1493. There are also some small natural bridges and blow holes. Once it was possible to enter the main cavern down a ladder, but the ladder was removed. It remains unclear if the reason are the danger to the visitors or to the engravings. However, from the rim you can easily see the Taino remains.

The breathtaking view from the cliffs are the reason why it was used as a filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean.

The site is not developed despite the parking lot and ticket booth, but it is not very difficult to reach the caves. For the fee you get an explanation how to find the various caves. But as you are walking and climbing on the rocks some surefootedness and appropriate shoes are necessary.
