History

Description

Princess Manan-aw Cave seems to be the name of a cave trekking tour. As far as we understand the name of the cave is Cagong-cagong Cave System or Cagongcagong Cave System. It is a group of 20 caves in Bullones Limestone from the Late Miocene (11 Ma – 5 Ma). Its unclear though if this is actually a cave system or a group of different caves. The definition is simple, if they are connected they are the same cave. Literature on Philippine caves is extremely sparse, so we actually have no idea.

However, the Princess Manan-aw Cave section of the cave which is almost 200 m long and full of speleothems, is used for cave trekking tours. It is also Geotope 10 of the Bohol Island Geopark. The cave is not developed and there is no light, but the floor is level and there is no need to crawl or climb. Visitors get hard hats and lamps, and are guided by locals from Cagong-Cagong village. The open hours as well as the location, are for the Cagongcagong Village Hall, where you should start by hiring a guide. We do not have the location of the cave, and the Google Maps pin is reportedly wrong, but if you find the cave, as far as we know, you may visit it freely. Nevertheless, we generally recommend to make a guided tour, which is much safer.
