Lamanok Caves is a group of caves located on a peninsula at the eastern coast of Bohol. For unknown reasons this peninsula is called an "island", but actually there two tiny islands off the coast. The peninsula has limestone cliffs bordering the sea, the waves formed horizontal sea caves at the foot of the cliffs. There are at least two levels of such sea caves, while the lowe is at beach height and flooded during high water levels, the higher level is dry. It was used by man as shelter since prehistoric times. As a result there was a wealth of archaeological remains, including engravings and cave paintings, but also pottery. The caves are used until today by the local to give offerings to the local deity.
One of the bigger caves is named Ka Iska Cave and is located some distance from the beach. It is obviously a karst cave and has stalactites and stalagmites. The floor is level and the cave is easy to visit. The Prehistoric Graveyard Cave is locaterd right at the sea. Stalagnates, pillars formed by stalactite and stalgmite meeting, are abundant here, and actually form walls in the cave. The cave is not very deep, just a ledge along the cliff with an overhang. This is the cave with the cave paintings, if it was actually used for burials is unknown, it seems the guides tend to tell exaggerated legends. The Fossilized Clam is a sea cave of the low level, which is actually in the making. Namesake is a rock formation at the entrance, which looks like a clam. It seems the small sea cave has a connection to a karst cave behind, which is quite spacious.
The visits to the caves are guided tours which include a boat ride. They are dubbed eco tourism, and thats probably the right term. Locals bring visitors with their selfmade boats to the cave and tell some legends of
