History

Description

La Campagne Tropicana Hills Resort is a hotel of the resort type, which means there are numerous small houses spreading over a certain area. La Campagne Tropicana is the name of the company which operates several such resorts, the name Hills Resort or sometimes Hills and Caves Resort Itan Nla is a reference to the geological specialties of the grounds. This resort was built on a hillside which is full of huge boulders, they were eroded and rolled down the hill forming a labyrinth of rocks and between the boulders there are numerous caves. The location is exceptional, as it is actually in the middle of the city Ondo, the state capital. The northern side of the city is bordered by a series of granite hills, one of them protruding southwards into the city is the location of the resort. The multiple caves were integrated into the resort some huts were built into caves or under overhanging boulders, there is even a cave restaurant named Eebio Cave Restaurant. They state it’s Africa’s first natural cave restaurant. Other caves are used for yoga, meditation, cave weddings, and cave painting courses. We guess they do not paint the cave walls, more likely they simply paint inside the cave, but they do not elaborate.

The chain of resorts was founded by Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, in an attempt to draw tourism and thus strengthen economy. His first resort was called La Campagne Tropicana Forest River and Beach Resort which was created in 1984. All those resorts represent the local culture, local crafts and local geography to create a resort which is more like staying as a guest at a traditional village than at a hotel. At the same time it provides all the necessary comfort. The resorts are almost like local history museums. They are located in Lagos State, Kogi State and Nassarawa state in Nigeria, Akosombo in Ghana, Grand Bassam in Cote d’Ivoire, and Wolyta Soddo in Ethiopia.

The resort offers what they call daycation package. It’s a full day on the site with activities like volleyball, badminton, lawn tennis, and soccer. There are classic board games like ludo, draft, and monopoly. Visitors may freely roam the area, have a picnic, eat at the restaurant, have a coffee.
