History

Description

Ezeagu Cave is the common name of this cave, actually the name of the cave is Ihuezi Cave. As the cave is located near Obinofia Ndiuno it is also dubbed Obinofia Ndiuno Caves. The cave entrance is located at the foot of a cliff in the middle of jungle. It’s necessary to walk there for about 30 minutes on a rather comfortable trail. The cave has two entrance, a rather narrow and high one on the right side and a lower and wider on the left side. Both are river caves, though the river is normally a shallow brook flowing slowly. Actually both meet inside, and the two rivers flowing out meet again a few meters from the cave.

The whole area is called Ezeagu Tourist Complex, located in Obinofia Ndiuno half an hour drive from the state capital. The area has 22 ha and includes the cave, a waterfall, a natural spring and a lake. For unknown reasons the water of the 23 m high Ogbagada waterfall is said to have a healing effect. According to local lore the water has a strange property: when feet are dipped inside the temperature goes from cool to warm in a few seconds. You probably guessed it: this is not magical, its simply what always happens when you put your feet in cool water.

A word of caution: tropical countries unfortunately have tropical diseases, especially in caves. The bat colony in the cave is a source of histoplasmosis, while other diseases may be in the water. Tourists from foreign countries should definitely be careful. We strongly recomment gum boots instead of walking barefooted into the cave, and if you have wear an FFP2 mask, you probably have some lying around since Corona. Also, there are numerous insects in the cave (obviously the food source of the bats), so a repellent is quite important.
