History

Description

The Grutas del Mamut (Mammoth Caves) is a small cave with a single huge chamber with a 15 m high ceiling. It has nice speleothems, mostly stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is developed with trails and electric light, so it is possible to visit the cave on self guided tours. The cave was named after a huge stalagmite which resembles a mammoth.

The cave is located inside the Grutas del Mamut Ecotourism Park, which offers mostly a sort of park with barbecue and picnic space, green grass and trees, and a stream. It offers multiple sports opportunities like a soccer field and volleyball courts, swimming in the stream or renting a carbon fibre boat, or use one of the two abseiling lines. Park and cave cost a nominal fee and are frequented by locals, so we suggest to avoid the weekends. Bring your own firewood or charcoal, and protect the place.
