History

Description

Cueva del Diablo (Devil’s Cave) is a very common name, so there is a very high potential of a mix-up. This cave of this name is a quite popular tourist spot, which is a result of its location. It lies in the middle of the city Mazatlán, at the coastal road P.º Claussen at the west coast of the peninsula where the city center is located. The sea is on one side of the road, a cliff face on the other, and the cave is located at the foot of the cliff, easily accessible. There are numerous outlooks, monuments, and it’s possible to park along the road.

This cave is quite small and unspectacular. The cave was created by the waves of the sea which eroded a section of weak rock creating a short passage which is almost rectangular. The location is obviously quite good for prehistoric man who was fishing at the coast, and the visited the cave and left cave paintings. The red paintings with a strange design were obviously the reason for the name. The design was strange but the red colour is a typical colour associated with the devil. Fortunately the cave is gated, which protects the paintings from vandalism. The iron bar gate allows a view into the cave, which is why we listed it as accessible at all times. We could not find anything about visiting the inside, we guess the key is only accessible for scientists making a request at the community.

Most visitors obviously do not even know about the cave paintings. There is unfortunately no educational sign, but the gate is quite spectacular, and the reason why the cave is known to tourists. The iron bar are painted in flashy red, as well as the huge iron letters on top, which display the name Cueva del Diablo. And for illiterate people, a large devil’s face made of sheet metal was also added, also in bright red, of course.
