The Pergola Hotel Cave Bar is not the name of this site, actually it is named Cave Bar and is located inside Pergola Hotel. However, Cave Bar is not a name, and it is easy to mix up, so we made the name unique by adding the location. The small cave has a single chamber with the size of the portal and only a few meters deep. Although the ceiling is domed, and it actually does not look artificial as it lacks any straight wall, we strongly suggest that it is indeed an artificial cave. It actually has not a single detail which is typical for a cave, like a small speleothem, for example. When it was dug and for what purpose is unclear though. Most likely it was never used as a cave house, probably it was a storage room or a barn. The hotel has transformed the small cave into a bar which opens on the central patio and the swimming pool. It’s a comfortable way to get some shadow.
The Cave Bar is a seasonal establishment which is only open in summer. It is not only the hotel’s pool bar, it is also a restaurant offering a light lunch, a late afternoon snack or even dinner. The outdoor terrace is used for summer barbeques, weddings, and other private functions. It is one of Mellieħa’s most popular venues. And it is a cave with a view, offering a great view across the valley to the historic center and the church.
