History

30-MAR-1974 discovered.

Description

كفر حيم (Kfar Him) was named after the nearby village. It was discovered by boys playing football. Their ball fell into a hole, and they had to climb in to retrieve it and discovered the cave. The headlines of the local newspaper read "Jeita Grotto in Kvrahim".

The cave has quite nice speleothems, although they are a little mixed up. While they write from right to left in the Lebanon, the stalactites seem to grow from the bottom upwards. We first thought the pictures were upside down, but actually the stalactites were placed upside down. We guess some helpful guy placed the speleothems in the most dramatic way he could think of, without knowing the whereabouts. This unfortunately shows the attitude of the owners, for them, it's just a sort of fairground attraction and a venue, not a natural monument. The tours are expensive and quite short, one visitor told his tour took exactly 8 minutes. The stories seem unlikely at first, but the overwhelming number of really poor reviews plus the readiness to fake dripstones results in our recommendation to avoid this place.
