When the 보령 석탄박물관 (bolyeongseogtanbagmulgwan, Boryeong Coal Museum) was opened in May 1995 it was actually the first coal museum in Korea. The coal was the main fuel of Korea in the 1970s and 1980s and the main energy for modern industrial development. The Coal Museum exhibits the working environment and equipment for mining coal. There are exhibitions on coal formation, geology and the history of coal mines.
The museum has a indoor exhibition and an outdoor exhibition. The open air museum is called Coal Mining Village Experience Center and is a reproduction of Seongju-ri, the largest coal mining village in Boryeong-si. And there is the briquette making experience center, which demonstrates how briquettes are made using coal powder.
