Description

関門トンネル人道 (Kanmon Kaikyo Tunnel) is a pedestrian tunnel which connects Kyushu (Moji ward, Kitakyushu) and Honshu (Shimonoseki), to major islands of Japan under the sea. The tunnel is below the spectacular bridge of the motorway E2A. The Kanmon National Highway Tunnel is a road tunnel which connects the center of Kitakyushu on Kyushu island and Shimonoseki on Honshu island. And it connects the prefectures of Yamaguchi and Fukuoka. The distance between the two tunnel entrances is 3.4 km.

But in the section where the toll tunnel crosses the sea underground, there is a pedestrian tunnel running parallel. The entrances are at the sea shore, and a tunnel leads down and across the sea in a parallel tube, only for pedestrians. The distance between Mimosusogawa and Mekari on the opposite bank is 780 m which is a 15 minutes walk. It's also possible to bring a bicycle or moped, but then you have to pay a small fee, and you have to push it.
