Beppu Benten Pond is a typical blue karst spring, catchment area is the nearby Akiyoshidai Plateau. The fresh water of the spring is full of rainbow trouts. Those trouts are also raised in the adjacent farming site and sold in the restaurant next to the pond. Legend has it that drinking a glass of this natural mineral water can extend life by a year - an offer that most visitors are happy to accept. There are faucets around the spring and the water is free, but donations are welcome.
