Grottino del Campidoglio (Capitoline Grotto) is located below Capitol Hill in Rome. The structure is scheduled to open to the public in late 2026 or early 2027. 3,900 m² of tunnels once housed warehouses, shops and taverns. It has been a stone quarry and cistern, air-raid shelter, and an underground market. The first cellars existed even before the days of Julius Caesar. They were sealed by Mussolini in the 1920s and were forgotten.
The site is at the moment being developed. They have funding of 2.3 Million Euro, so we are sure it will open soon. Unfortunately, at the moment we have neither a location nor a detailed description, so stay tuned. We will add updates as soon as we get them.
