History

2011 cave opened to the public.

Description

The Grotte Taquisara or Grotte di Gairo Taquisara is located on the mountainside above the village Taquisara, hence the name. It is operated as a show cave by the Cooperativa Grotte Taquisara, who offer guided tours since 2011. The cave was equipped with some trails and electric light, but the tours started as hikes which showed numerous sights in the area including nuraghe ruins, a town which was abandoned after it was flooded three times, a pecorino producer, outlooks and others. They offered walks of different length, including full day tours. They continued the development which has now reached a length of 700 m. The plans of opening the cave as an official show cave were somewhat delayed by the Corona pandemic. They have a new domain and website, but it is still empty. However, the cave entrance is almost 200 m higher than the village, and it is necessary to walk up. So the tours will include hiking for the foreseeable future.

The mountains on both sides of the valley are full of vast cave systems. Another cave is also open for guided cave trekking tours. Its name is Grotta dell'Angelo (Cave of the Angel). It is only 10 minutes walk from the village, behind the old stone quarry.
