History

Description

The marble quarry Galleria Ravaccione is probably the most impressive of all quarries around Carrara. It was started after the construction of a 1,200 m long road tunnel which was intended to connect the narrow Apuan valley. The builders were impressed by the quality of the marble in the middle of the mountain, so an underground quarry or marble mine was constructed right in the middle of the mountain. The result is a series of enormous underground halls.
