Description

The Burkhardklamm (Cascate Burkhard, Burkhard gorge) is famous for two striking waterfalls. It is located at the end of the Ridnaun Valley and can only be reached after some walking. The gorge was used as access to several huts and high pastures since the so-called Trägerweg (carrier path) across the gorge was built in 1899. It was used until World War II. After the war carrying was not done any more and the path fell into oblivion. Today there is again a trail which was built as an educational hiking trail by the tourist association of Ratschings. It follows the old trail in several sections.

The gorge is accessible without restrictions but not easily. It is located high up in the Alps, the nearby high pastures Aglsboden Mountain Pasture (1,700 m asl) is operated only during summer. The 45 minutes walk is not very difficult, nevertheless you should prepare for bad weather and always check the weather forecast when walking in the mountains. And it ascends 300 m, so the whole tour will tke between two and three hours, depending on your physical fitness. It's possible to get there in winter but only with appropriate gear. But the trail is not maintained and the trail through the gorge might be quite dangerous. We recommend visits between June and October only.
