Geoparco Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni

The Geoparco Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni is originally a national park named Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni (Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park). The National Park was founded in 1991, became a UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve in 1997, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, and is also a UNESCO Global GeoPark since 2010. Their website states that they became a Global Geopark "thanks to the beauty of the numerous caves". Even the local food is a World Heritage Site! The Mediterranean Diet, deeply linked to this land, has been declared an Intangible Heritage by UNESCO. Having traveled through this region we can confirm any of these statements.

The landscape has gentle hills covered with centuries-old olive trees contrasting with rugged limestone mountains. The Cilento Flysch along the coast is quite famous with its stratified and colored rocks, most spectacular at Ripe Rosse and Punta Licosa. The karst areas are further inland, mountain ridges separated by large ravines dug by the streams that cross the territory.
