Αλμυρού Αγ. Νικολάου (Saltwater Spring Saint Nicholas) is a karst spring located close to the beach. It has a diameter of 35 m and is 300 m from the beach. The spring is an outflow of an underwater cave system. Due to an connection to the sea, salt water is able to enter the cave system. The salt water mixes with the sweet water before it reappears at the spring and thus the spring is brackish.
Several springs on Crete have this problem, which is of massive economic importance. The sweet water is needed as drinking water and for irrigation, the saltwater makes it unusable.
