History

Description

The small monastery Μονή Υπαπαντής (Ipapanti Monastery) is located north of Kaliviani. It actually consists only of a single building and a small churck or chapel. There are numerous small caves around the monasterywhich were used as monk cells. But the most important cave is the cave church Υπαπαντής του Σωτήρος (Respondent of the Savior).

The monastery is reached on a single lane gravel road from the coastal road which branches off opposite the Balos Beach Hotel. The monastery is not in operation any more, but the church is most likely open. However, the cave church is closed by an iron bar gate which allows a peak inside. Once a year on 02-FEB a festival is celebrated at the church and both churches are open.
