Description

The Museu de les Mines de Cercs (Cercs Mine Museum) is dedicated to coal mining in the Sant Corneli colony in the municipality of Cercs, Catalonia. The underground tour starts with a 450 m long ride on a mine train through the San Román gallery. The visitor then walk back the same tunnel while the guide explains the process of coal mining. The museum outside the mine has two sections, the daily life of the miners including a video showing a miners home in 1940, and the background of coal. This includes its exploitation, the mining infrastructures, transport and the classification of coal. The museum is part of the Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia and of the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network.

The area was the most important mining centre in Catalonia. It included the cities Cercs, Fígols and Vallcebre. There were three miners towns which were named Sant Corneli, Sant Josep and La Consolació. They were in a way the result of a new law which was passed on 25-MAY-1901. The law said that companies with more than 150 employees had to provide their workers with basic facilities and services. As a result the owner of the mine, J. E. de Olano, soon commissioned a school, a theatre, a pub, a corner shop and a football pitch.
