Description

A cala is a cove or bay, and Cala Covas is the bay of caves. There are nearly 150 small caves in the cliff above this cove, some of them artificial or at least artificially enhanced. Some of the caves were inhabited in prehistoric times, several findings were made here. But during the 20th century, the caves were discovered by "hippies" which lived here for many years. After they left the caves were full of garbage, as they left a lot of their belongings behind, e.g. old mattresses. The government closed the place for tourists and cleaned the caves, so now they are a neat and impressive place again.
