Description

The Cueva de los Guácharos National Park was the first National Park in Colombia, created in 1961. It is named after its main feature, a cave which is the roost of the Guácharo or Oilbird (Steatornis caripensis). However, this is not the Cueva de los Guácharos where Alexander von Humboldt, the famous German naturalist, first described the oilbirds. This famous homonymous cave is located in Venezuela. Nevertheless, this cave is very interesting and roost to numerous of the rare bird. And actually the park protects more than 90 square kilometers of karst terrain and uncountable caves and karst features.
