History

Description

The Cueva del Esplendor (Cave of Splendour) is a popular excursion from Jardín. Tour operators offer guided walks and horseback riding to the cave. As the walk takes about three hours the horses are probably a good idea. The cave is actually just a huge cavern, what makes it spectacular is a cave river which flows above ground, then sinks into a shaft and reappears in the ceiling of this huge cavern. It has formed a cave lake which fills the whole cavern and is a popular bathing spot, especially after three hours walk or a ride on smelly horses. Some even top this by abseiling through the shaft with the waterfall. If you refrain from such activities, the site is definitely worth a picture, especially if the sun shines through the shaft around noon and gives the waterfall a halo of sunlight and illuminated the cave. Actually we did not understand the logic in getting dirty to take a swim and then get dirty again to get home, but the site seems to be quite popular. Probably it's the extensive bird life you will see on your walk.
