History

1988 explored by a Belgian-Chinese Speleological Expedition.

Description

黄金洞 (Huángjīn dòng, Golden Cave) is a karst cave in Jurassic limestones. It is called Gold Cave, Golden Cave or Golden Cavern. The locals originally called it Black Cave, and it was the place where the Tusi or chieftain of the local minority hid his treasures. At least that’s the legend and the reason why it was renamed Gold Cave. It is officially listed as 唐崖河黃金洞 (Táng yá hé huángjīn dòng, Tangya River Golden Cave).

The cave was explored by a joint Chinese-Belgian expedition in 1988. Ite is famous for huge stalactites and stalagmites, pools with calcite crystals and a gorge called Great Canyon which is crossed on a rope bridge.

The cave is part of 唐崖河·黄金洞景区 (Táng yá hé·huángjīn dòng jǐngqū, Tangya River·Golden Cave Scenic Area). The entrance is at the S249, which winds down from the village towards Tangya River. There is a huge car park, visitor center with ticket office, and shops. From here a trail leads upstream along the river to the huge cave portal.

The cave is a through-cave and a river cave, through which Tangya River crosses the whole mountain. The distance between swallow hole and resurgence is about 700 m. The passage is quite spacious, and so it can easily swallow the whole river, even during times of flooding. The trails are higher up and not flooded.
